Midnight Oil

February 17

Forty three years ago I applied to be the lead singer of Midnight Oil. Needless to say I didn’t get the job, despite singing Jethro Tull’s Locomotive Breath completely in tune. They gave the job to the other guy because he could actually dance and sing.

Today, however, after more than four decades of heroic self-denial I was privileged enough to be invited to host the press conference that announced Midnight Oil’s return to the stage with a global tour in the Age of Trump. The “Great Circle 2017 Tour’ begins with a pub gig in Sydney in April and then heads to Brazil, the United States, Canada, Europe, New Zealand and then back to Australia for a national tour before finishing up in Sydney’s Domain on Armistice Day, November 11.

What a moment in Australian rock history and, of course, I told the band I was still ready to play understudy to Peter Garrett should the moment arise!

Here is the live press conference from today: https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=midnight%20oil%20world%20tour and the story I wrote 27 years ago on the phenomenon that was – and still is – Midnight Oil: http://davidleser.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Peter-Garrett.pdf
